Dog License Tags: From the Pup’s POV

Dog license tags are a highly practical investment for a pet owner, serving as a cost-effective tool that ensures that your pet, should he stray, is easily identifiable in order to facilitate a painless reunification as soon as possible. That’s not to mention that these jangling bits of metal are quite inexpensive—and also mandatory—so they’re certainly cheaper than the fines one has to pay if their dog turns up without one. Thus, dog license tags are, in a word, a no-brainer.

We have written before about the general utility of dog license tags for pet owners. But what about what they have to offer for the pets themselves? Think about it from the pup’s point of view too.

Saved by the Bell: 2023 Rabies Tags

Dog with 2023 rabies tag

Aside from their endearing iconography (the silhouette of a bell), 2023 rabies tags are this year’s must-have fashion accessory for dogs (and cats!) for one primary reason: they keep everyone—pets and people—safe. And it’s no wonder why: they are a conspicuous visual cue that an animal has been inoculated against the deadly rabies virus, among the most monstrous known to humanity.

The sight of such a tag pendant on the collar of a wandering dog that has perhaps strayed too far beyond its owner’s watchful gaze is a welcome one, as well as being the only mode of communication our furry companions possess through which to inform us that they’re up to date on their vaccines (at least until someone finally teaches Border Collies how to talk).

The Purpose of Pet License Tags

Pet license tags for dog and cat

Some dog and cat owners sometimes wonder why their animal needs to wear a pet license tag (also called a pet I.D.) all the time. This is especially true of the owners of strictly indoor cats, or of dogs restricted to secure, fenced-in backyard enclosures. The answer can be summed up in three words: safety, safety, and safety.

The fact is, with incentive enough (e.g., a squirrel on the run), most pets are smart and determined enough to thwart the most secure enclosure. A fence can be leapt over or dug under, or your careless teenager can leave the front door ajar—and then, before you know it, your pet is outside and in the wind.

But for summer-loving humans, it comes with its own set of risks and dangers as well, from sunburn and poison ivy to pesky mosquitoes and under-barbecued burgers.

The same applies to our beloved pets. While dogs and cats love to explore outside when the weather turns warm, it is important to remember there are hidden perils in even the most serene and halcyonic settings that can put their health and very lives at risk.

This infographic will serve as a reminder to pet owners to stay alert to those perils. Continue reading “Five Summer Pet Safety Tips [Infographic]”
